Recorded in 1999, this album contains the first songs
I’ve written that I wasn’t ashamed of.
Most were co-written by Rob Veith, who also plays
guitars on the album. The idea was to put down songs
in varied musical styles (though mostly acoustic),
in a somewhat rough and retro setting.
I met Rob in 1994 in Ecuador. A few years later I
was attending Trinity Western University near Vancouver,
BC, while Rob was just across the border in Bellingham,
WA. Together with my brother Dan we formed IF, a somewhat
occasional and ill-fated band dedicated primarily
to recording some of Rob’s songs. I moved to
Germany, where I worked stacking newspapers for a
while. In the meantime, I wrote occasional lyrics,
influenced greatly by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and
Larry Norman. I set some of these lyrics to music,
and sent others to Rob to see what tunes he could
come up with. I returned to Canada for a bit in 1999,
and we put the album together in a couple of weekends,
recording in my brother Dan’s basement studio.
